Most DVD players now upscale the standard DVD picture of 576 lines to at least 1080i and many to 1080p, providing as near as makes little difference, a high definition picture. The more you spend the better the upscaling and the picture and sound generally.

BluRay discs are able to give full high definition 1080p pictures, as well as high def sound (such as Dolby True HD, and DTS Master Audio, by using a blue laser to read high density discs (around 30 -35Gb). Blue light has a much shorter wavelength than the standard red used on normal DVD and hence the data can be closer together on a disc and more info can be stored without too much compression, allowing for lots of extras including high resolution sound (SACD quality and above).
