The heart of any home cinema. AV amplifiers (aka surround amps, home cinema receivers) are multi-channel amplifers that can reproduce the soundtrack in 5.1 or 7.1  surround sound. This normally means they have 5 or 7 channels of amplification on board.

Features are usually plentiful, especially as you go up in price. Some of the more notable ones are : HDMI switching, allowing picture and sound to be passed to the amp for conversion via one cable and one cable to the TV, upscaling (of non-HD sources), 2 or more zones (often using unused 6th and 7th channels), room acoustics compensation, self setup and pre-ins & outs.
