Amplifiers come in a few guises. Integrated amps incorporate a pre-amp and power amp in the same box, and often sharing the same power supply (dual mono construction sometimes has 2 separate power supplies and two mono amos in one box). The pre amp takes the small signals from the source and boosts them to an acceptable level for the power amp to reduce distortion from trying to 'magnify' the signal too much in one stage.
Separate pre and power amplifiers are available which split the duties and have the advantage of separate power supplies and boxes, the idea being that the power amps huge current draws don't distort the power for the sensitive pre-amp stage.
Valve amps use good old glass thermionic valves and transformers to do the job, and really sound lovely and sweet with low noise characteristics, but inherently lower power.
Solid state amps use transistors of some description for amplification, and hybrids use valves for the pre- and transistors for the power- stages.
Monoblocks split the duties even further and have separate boxes and power supplies for each channel (L&R)
