Hard disc drive (HDD) recorders use a standard PC hard drive to record music or video, and offer convenience, speed and almost infinite re-use (until the disc dies). DVD and CD recorders use writable discs to record on, and can often use re-writable discs, but these sometimes can't be played on other machines.
